Angel Tattoos

As tattoos in general trigger contradictory public opinions, angel tattoos don't escape the controversy. Depending on one's religious values, culture and ethnicity there are guardian angels and dark angels, fallen angels and pagan angels; spiritual beings with supernatural powers symbolizing untold desires and hopes.

The angels' wings made humans long to fly, their supernatural powers made people fall down on their knees and pray. So it is no surprise to see someone getting an angel tattoo. A tattoo representing an angel has typically a religious significance. Some women tattooed with angels, choose such designs to get in touch with their religious feelings, or to attain a certain feeling of relief knowing that their guardian angel is watching over them.

People can have different reasons for getting tattooed with angels. From the relationship with God to a figure of protection, tattoos representing angels can also signify a personal memorial to a lost relative or friend. As a fallen angel exiled from Heaven, Satan or The Devil appears as a model as well. Such a depiction stands for pride, lust, self-rule or rebellion, but even so its religious significance cannot be ignored.

In spite of their general spiritual and religious connotations such visual representations can carry many times hidden aspirations, feelings and cravings. And speaking about hidden desires, angel representations make some people think of purity or spirits while others think of physical harmony and sometimes even sex.

Biblical angels are usually represented as young men, winged or not, with or without auras or haloes, acting as God's heralds. The angel designs for tattoos are different, many times portraying the renaissance child-angels or the more arty women-angels.
