Tribal Tattoo – A Personality Statement

Although an ancient form of tribal art, nowadays the tribal tattoo doesn't have a noteworthy meaning. It is more a personality statement than a mark of belonging to a band or a clan.

The traditional tribal tattoos are generally black or blue. Tattooers today use bolder colors and create complex tattoo designs that make tattooing more appealing.

It is very probable to find tattoos at persons from a band or clan – as back at the dawn of the tattooing art, when tattoos were used to show the belonging to a tribe. Many militaries have tattoos as well. But the facets of tattooing don't stop here. There are various reasons why people get tattooed: some to rebel against certain conservative rules, others because they are getting a sort of pressure from their tattooed friends and need to show their bravery. For some people tattooing is a form of connecting with their tribal ancestry. Lots of times fashion sets the rhythm. Statistic, people with tattoos fell more sexy and rebellious, while people without tattoos consider the tattooed ones less attractive, less sexy and less intelligent. It is a matter of taste.

From a historical point of view, warriors who believed that a tattoo could protect them in battle and help them survive appealed to tattooing. Tattoos were also religious symbols for many people. In the past there were almost only sailors and rough men having tattoos. Today it looks like everybody wants to get tattooed, no matter the social class, sex, or age… Even so, generally the young people get tattoos. After a while some regret having them and the reasons vary: being tattooed can influence getting a job; tattoos fade over time; people change, they "grow up" and being tattooed seems to be an unwise decision.

One thing is clear: no matter why a person is deciding to get a tattoo, this is a personal choice that needs to be respected.
